The 150th anniversary edition of the Chautauqua journal is in print, and my nonfiction short story, "Ecdysis," is in it.
The story is an excerpt from my recently completed memoir, Mountain Medicine, and to be honest, seeing it in print for the whole world to read (authors and other writers will laugh at that. We wish the entire world would read us.) makes me squirm. Like so many parts of my upcoming book, which describes years of healing and growth following the loss of my husband to opioid addiction, it is such a private and personal story.
I was invited to submit this piece. Jill Gerard, the journal's editor, has been a good friend and mentor to me. I could never say no to such an honor. So, I put aside my introversion and sent it in.
Lucky for me, this edition is currently available in print only. If you want to read my story and the gorgeous collection of other stories and poems, you'll have to buy a copy or wait until my book comes out.
